A trip to Yangon would not be complete without a visit to the market!

The Bogyoke Aung San Market is a wonderful place to spend a few hours, filled with vendors selling everything from jade, rubies, carved wood, T-shirts, and anything else you might want.

If you purchase raw stones or old statues, make sure the shop issues you a voucher to declare that it is legally purchased. Otherwise, the custom could confiscate them when you leave Myanmar.

Don’t forget to bargain when you buy anything because the price is always higher than its real cost.

Pick up some nice slippers and a longyi here, convenient for all the on-and-off demanded by pagoda protocol. U Maung Maung in the main hall has a good selection ranging from cotton ones for K5500 to silk-mix ones for K9500.

Other shops worth seeking out include Yo Ya May (1st floor), specializing in hill tribe textiles, particularly those from Chin State, and Heritage Gallery , next door, which has a good selection of reproduction and authentic antiques with an emphasis on lacquer ware.

The little shabby shop called "Lady Home" at the back of the market behind the Jewellery Row, near the old wooden foot bridge crossing the old circle line train tracks, makes delicious fried noodles and vermicelli dishes. For the adventurous, try the pig organs (intestines, tongue, ears, etc.) boiled and fried and then tossed in fiery chili sauce.
