
These markets are called “5 Day Markets” because the hill people rotate between 5 different locations over a 5 day period. They were here this day and people come from all over the lake to buy produce and other items. They come by boat and parking is scarce but somehow everyone manages to find their way in.
The assortment of vegetables present was amazing, tomatoes, eggplants, scallions, peppers, betel, beans, garlic, cheroots and more. Also, there are people selling lacquer ware, Buddha statues, longyis and Shan bags to name a few. On the full moon and dark moon days, the market is closed. But, all market days may be held one day ahead at the time of full-moon and dark-moon days.

The market is held in the every morning rotating at a village around Inle Lake except the full-moon, dark-moon days and holidays. It was very good to get there first thing in the morning because we missed the tour groups who came later.

It’s also a fun place and you will see people from many different ethnic backgrounds who you can usually be told by the women’s head dress. This is a very authentic market with all kinds of foods to try and the best prices for local clothing such as pants, scarfs and tops. The food is mostly to look at, but you can try the doughnuts and the peanut brittle candy. If you are really adventuresome, you can try other items too. Remember to bargain, you should put together a package and finally paid about fifty percent of the original asking prices.
